Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to submit your research contributions to the Special Session on “Data-Driven Approaches in Discrete Event Systems”, organized within the framework of the 18th Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES 2026), to be held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, from 8 to 10 June 2026.

The deadline for paper submission is 19 December 2025. We encourage you to consider this opportunity to present your recent work to the international DES community. Detailed information regarding the submission procedure and the conference program is available on the WODES 2026 website:
https://wodes2026.events.tue.nl/.

For any inquiries or further information, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to your contributions and to fruitful scientific exchanges during the event.

Special Session Description

Discrete Event Systems (DES) constitute a fundamental framework for modeling, analysis, and control of complex dynamic systems. Traditional DES methodologies, grounded in automata theory and Petri nets, have provided rigorous and powerful tools for decades. However, as contemporary systems grow increasingly large-scale, heterogeneous, stochastic, and data-intensive, purely model-based approaches face significant limitations, particularly regarding scalability, adaptability, and the management of uncertainty.

Recent developments in data-driven modeling, machine learning, statistical inference, and advanced data analytics offer new perspectives for DES theory and practice. Integrating these techniques with established DES frameworks opens promising research avenues, including the identification of event-driven models from data, real-time supervisory decision-making under uncertainty, anomaly and fault detection, and adaptive control in settings where system models are incomplete or partially unknown.

This special session aims to gather high-quality contributions from both academia and industry addressing the convergence of data-driven methodologies and discrete event systems. The session intends to provide a platform for disseminating novel theoretical advances, methodological innovations, and application-driven studies, thereby fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration.
